How and how to glue carrot seeds on paper
In order for the carrots to reach large sizes, they have to be thinned out when shoots appear. This is a difficult procedure. To avoid this, breeders use an alternative growing method, which involves sticking carrot seeds for planting on paper tape.
Method characteristic
Planting carrots on a belt is a convenient and time-saving way of growing. It is characterized by:
- saving space;
- maintaining moisture;
- good germination result.
Among the pluses, it is also noted that:
- it does not require thinning;
- all vegetables are at the same depth;
- all seeds will sprout at the same time;
- sowing is carried out in any weather conditions.
For the first 10 days of planting, do not need any maintenance. Watering is done 14 days after sowing. The plant is fed 2 times a year. The first fertilizer is applied 30 days after germination, the second - 40-50 days later.
How to stick carrot seeds on paper
They begin to plant carrots on a belt in the spring, so they prepare for sowing in winter. For tape germination, you will need several components:
- glue or paste, prepared by yourself;
- toilet paper, newspaper, napkins;
- capacity;
- scissors;
- tweezers.
To begin with, cut strips of paper, newspapers or take toilet paper. It is important that the material is loose. The width of the stripes is about 3 cm. Dots are put on the tape with a marker with a distance of 5-6 cm from each other. Seeds are later placed on these marks.
Before gluing, the seeds are poured into a small container. Then a special paste is prepared from flour or starch. Or they buy office glue. It is applied in a layer of 1.5 cm or in drops on the marks on the cut paper.
Using tweezers or a toothpick, the seeds are carefully glued onto the tape in the places where they were marked. After that, the paper with the planting material is dried and rolled, tied with an elastic band. Place the ball of paper with seeds in a cool dry place.
In the spring, beds are made and rolled paper is unrolled along the entire length of the groove. Water, sprinkle with soil and mulch. This method of planting a vegetable crop reduces the number of seeds used.
Making starch paste
To prepare 1 liter of homemade potato starch paste, there are several stages:
- Bring 800 ml of water to a boil. You can use both tap water and rain or melt water.
- Mix 4 tbsp separately. l. starch and 200 ml of water at room temperature.
- A mixture of starch is poured into boiled water, stirring constantly.
The composition of the paste should be thin. Mineral fertilizers are added to the warm mixture according to the instructions. The glue is used only after it has cooled down.
Making a paste using flour
To obtain 0.5 liters of paste at home, 400 ml of water is poured into a saucepan, brought to a boil. It is advisable to choose an enamelled container. Pour flour into the water in small portions at the rate of 4 tbsp. l. Mineral fertilizers are also added to it in a proportion of 1 tbsp. l. top dressing for 1 liter of water.
Stir the mixture until it has a liquid soap-like consistency. After the pan is removed from the heat and left in a cool place.
Seed preparation
Carrot seeds on a tape are calibrated and selected before gluing. This is done in order to select only a few seeds that will yield a good harvest. To do this, they are soaked in a saline solution. The planting material remaining at the bottom is classified as quality, and the one that surfaced is thrown away.
Before use, the seeds are soaked in a solution of boric acid for 12 hours. To do this, mix:
- 1 tsp drug;
- 1 liter of water;
- a few drops of liquid nitrogen dressing.
An alternative to boric acid is a solution of wood ash. For the mixture, use 2 tbsp. l. ash and 2 liters of water.
Carrot seeds have a special aroma due to the essential oils that envelop the seed coat. Remove excess essential oil before planting carrots. For this, the seeds are placed in gauze or any loose tissue and placed in a small container. It is poured with hot water and kept for about 2 hours.
After processing, the seeds are washed under running water. Before planting in open ground, they are dried, and then glued according to the scheme. Do not process them if they were purchased in a special store and all disinfection processes have gone through in production.
Preparing the soil for planting
Planting carrots on a ribbon begins in the spring. For good germination, appropriate soil preparation is carried out. It is prepared 14 days before sowing.
Preparation begins with loosening the soil 10 cm deep. After the ground level is leveled with a rake. Manure should not be introduced into the beds: this will spoil the quality of the planting material. They are made 2-3 cm deep. To plant the ribbons, the soil is moistened.
Planting carrots on tape
At the bottom of the moistened beds, paper strips are placed so that the seeds are directed upward and the empty side is directed downward toward the ground. After it is added dropwise and sprinkled with earth and sand.
There is also the option of not sticking the seeds, but simply placing them on paper. For this, a strip is placed on the beds, where several seeds are placed with an interval of 3-4 cm, they are covered with another tape on top. Sprinkle with soil and watered.
Also, the beds are covered with polyethylene and removed after 2-3 weeks. Before sowing, a little compost is placed on the bottom of the beds for germination.
Sticking seeds on a napkin
The beds are formed immediately. The planting material is glued to the paper at a distance of 4 cm from each other. The seeds are glued using tweezers or a toothpick.
Paper napkins are placed both in the open field and in large boxes with soil. The soil is pre-treated with fertilizers and disinfected.
Conclusion
In order to properly plant carrots using paper tape, the planting rules and gluing schemes are followed. This growing method increases the chances of quick germination and improves yields. It makes the fruit more resistant to disease and insects.
