Growing an apple tree Glory to the Winners
Apple tree Glory to the winners was bred in the Soviet Union by the breeder Simirenko. He crossed the Macintosh and Papirovka varieties to create a new hybrid that gained immense popularity. Later, this species was zoned throughout the territory of Ukraine, and then they began to grow it in other countries.

Characteristics of the variety
Description of the tree and fruit
The apple tree is vigorous, has a large and lush crown. She has a mixed type of fruiting. The small stems are light brown, dotted with small lenticels.
If trees grow in a nursery, the brown color changes to brown.
The sheets are medium in size and not bright green. Their shape is standard - oval. There is a slight serration around the edges.
The apple tree is especially beautiful during the flowering period: pink small flowers with a pleasant aroma appear.
The apples are yellowish with a profuse red blush, medium-sized, but sometimes very large. The weight of one is from 120 to 180 g. There is a grayish bloom and subcutaneous white dots.
The seed chambers are large and wide, located along the entire length, open, and each contains 4-6 medium-sized seeds.
Taste
For many people, the apples of Glory to the Winners remind of the distant taste of childhood.
The pulp is medium-grained, soft and juicy. The taste is sweet with a sourish undertone.
In terms of composition, this variety contains:
- sugar 13-14%;
- ascorbic acid 8 mg per 100 g;
- active substances 100 mg per 100 g;
- acids 0.8%.
His tasting score is quite high. The fruits can be eaten not only fresh. They are suitable for drying, baking, preserves and compotes.
Yield
According to the description, the yield of the Slava Pobeditel variety is high, but much depends on the weather conditions and the territory where the apple tree grows.
The first fruits appear 2 years after planting: 10-20 kg can be harvested, and after a couple of years already 70 kg.
In the South, the yield is the highest: up to 100-200 kg / ha. Maximum yield under the right conditions: 300 kg / g.
Pollinators
According to its characteristics, the apple variety Glory to the winners does not have high self-fertility, so it needs help.
Suitable pollinators: Melba, Borovinka, Antonovka, Vadimovka, Priam and Delichiya.
Apple trees can even be in neighboring summer cottages: if they grow a few meters away (up to 50), this will have a positive effect on the future harvest.
When planting seedlings, you need to take into account this feature, and plant them correctly, otherwise the plant's harvest will turn out to be completely insignificant, or it will not be at all.
Disease and pest resistance
The tree can succumb to the influence of a fungal disease, due to which its leaves will acquire dark spots, begin to curl, dry out and fall off.
Fruits can become deformed and lose their taste. Careful care is needed to prevent this from happening.
In which regions are they grown
According to the description, Slava Winners is a fairly winter-hardy apple tree: it adapts to different weather conditions.
These trees can be grown in different areas and in different regions, but the harvest can change the timing of ripening: in colder countries and regions, the harvest does not take place in the fall, but even later.
It is popular throughout Ukraine, especially in Polesie, also in the Kuban and in central Russia, in the Urals.
Landing
The best time to plant seedlings is autumn or spring, it all depends on the region.
If suddenly, before planting, the seedlings are planted, you need to remove the dry branches and leaves, and put the tree itself in water for 5 hours.
In the fall, they plant in the southern territories, having prepared the pits in advance (2 weeks in advance) so that the land has time to settle. Can be planted in spring when the soil warms up well.
The diameter of the hole should be 70 cm, and the depth should be 1 m. Fertilizer is poured inside - organic or mineral, so that the plant takes root faster.
A seedling is placed in the finished hole, the roots are spread with their hands and, holding by the trunk, they are carefully covered with earth by 6 cm. The ground at the base must be trampled down and watered abundantly with one bucket of water.
Care
Growing an apple tree requires careful care for it: it requires timely watering, feeding, crown formation and protection from pests.
Watering
Water immediately after planting. One seedling takes 1 bucket of water.
Further watering depends on the climate and territory: in a sunny place in a temperate climate - 1 bucket under each tree, once a week. In case of heat and drought, or, conversely, being in the shade - up to 2 buckets per day.
Be sure to irrigate during ovary formation, during flowering and after harvest (2 times a week).
The larger the tree, the more water will go to it.
Top dressing
- The first feeding begins in April - the root system is filled with nitrogen-containing fertilizers (urea, humus and ammonium nitrate).
- The second time during flowering. Poultry manure, superphosphate, potassium sulfate and urea are used.
- The third time after flowering, when the fruits have already formed, but not matured. Take nitrophoska or green fertilizer.
After harvesting, be sure to fertilize the trees in summer and winter. They are fed only with mineral supplements.
For fertilizers, several holes are dripped around the trunk in exactly a circle, at a distance of 10 m from the tree.
Preventive spraying
There are several diseases that require prophylactic spraying with various pest control agents.
The culture can be affected by powdery mildew, which appears in the form of plaque and ruins the crop. Boric acid or copper oxychloride helps well against it.
For the prevention of scab, you can spray with infusions of chamomile, garlic or onions. If it has already appeared, use a special tool - Topaz.
Fruit rot is common, and most of the crop is lost. The tree can be sprayed with Hom. Milky sheen is a disease that can easily kill an entire tree. In addition to spraying with special preparations, the tree is also treated with glue.
Pruning and shaping the crown
You should carefully consider the formation of the crown during the period of growing the tree, because in this variety, it is thick. Due to the abundance of branches, they can often break and grow incorrectly.
During the formation of the ovaries, they need to be thinned so that there is no abundance of fruits. Later, only dry or damaged branches need to be removed.
Features of ripening and fruiting
The variety is characterized by high yield. Already 7-8 years after planting seedlings, you can collect about 18 kg of apples from one tree. Already for 15-18 years, the culture will triple its productivity (60-75 kg).
The fruits ripen in the summer and late summer period: they delight with their harvest at a time when the early varieties no longer bear fruit, and the autumn ones are still ripening. The harvesting period cannot be called short - up to 5 weeks.
Harvesting and storage
Harvested in late August or early September. If the area where the tree grows with a cold climate, ripening and harvesting may occur a month later.
The fruits are not stored so long, but they perfectly tolerate transportation.
Those apples that are harvested in the southern regions can only lie for 2 weeks. Those that are torn off later can be stored until December and even a little more.
Varieties of rootstocks
There are several subspecies of the Glory Winners apple tree: the dwarf and semi-dwarf rootstocks have excellent compatibility with the variety. Grafted trees have better frost resistance, besides, their fruits are stored longer, they begin to bear fruit and ripen earlier.
- Fruiting begins as early as 4 years old, if you use a weak vegetative stock.
- Speaking of vigorous growth, the first harvest can be harvested in the 5-6 year of the tree's life. Initially, the culture bears fruit annually, then a periodicity may arise, which is associated with the level of the agricultural background.
Gardeners reviews
The Slava Winners apple variety has been known since the times of the Soviet Union. Of course, now there are many other varieties, but gardeners praise this tree for its extreme yield and ease of maintenance.
Dignity
Good qualities include high yields, regular fruiting, excellent resistance to winter and low temperatures.
The apple tree grows large and lush. Apples have a presentable appearance, they are tasty and very sweet (while the calorie content is low), which is why they are in great demand.
disadvantages
Of the shortcomings, the tree can be attributed to the fact that it does not like drought, requires constant watering, otherwise the fruits, not yet fully ripe, will sprinkle and the leaves will dry out.
A huge disadvantage is that the apple tree has a dense and lush crown, which is why the fruits can grow small if not thinned out.
The plant is not self-fertile. For high yields, other pollinating varieties must grow next to it.
