Spring fertilization of carrots
Carrots are fertilized throughout the growing period. But for a good harvest, it is important to fertilize carrots in the spring. The choice of fertilizer depends on the type of soil.
Preparing the soil for planting
To make the vegetable stronger, fertilizer is introduced into the garden in advance (the soil is pre-fertilized). Choose a place where tomatoes, onions, cabbage or potatoes used to grow.
Carrots love organic fertilizers. Compost and peat manure are often used. They are brought in in the spring at the rate of 6-8 kg per 1 sq. m.
If necessary, the earth is deoxidized with ash, dolomite flour or chalk. If the soil pH is below 5.5, liming is carried out. On too acidic soil, the vegetable will lose its taste. In the spring, fertilization for carrots begins 2 weeks before sowing. Also, nitrogen feeding of carrots is carried out in the spring.
Fertilizer is not applied simultaneously with liming. Mineral is added after harvest or 2-3 weeks before sowing.
Baking powder is added to heavy soil, and a mixture of nitrogen and phosphorus is added to the rest. The garden bed is dug to a depth of 25 cm.
Method one
The choice depends on the type of soil:
- sawdust, sand or humus are applied to peat soil;
- it is good to add sand, humus or peat to clay and podzolic;
- sand, sawdust and 2 st. l. superphosphate;
- mixtures of nitrogen and phosphorus are introduced into the sandy soil.
Method two
They also use another fertilization option before planting:
- vermicompost is introduced 2 weeks before planting;
- 2-3 days before planting - humates.
For 1 sq. m take 65-80 g of mineral fertilizer, dig up the soil. Ash is used instead of a mineral mixture. For 1 sq. m spray 2 handfuls and evenly distribute over the site with a rake. Ash is also brought in during digging at the rate of 12 kg per one hundred square meters of land.
Fertilizer when planting
To speed up the emergence of seedlings, the seeds are treated before planting. There are several popular ways:
- Sowing seeds with paste. For this, liquid glue is prepared from flour and mineral mixtures are diluted in it, mixed with seeds and sown.
- Soaking seeds in boric acid solution. For 1 liter of solution add 1/3 tsp. acid and 1/2 tsp. nitrogen.
- Seed treatment with wood ash. For this, 1 tbsp. l. ash is diluted in 1 liter of water. The seeds are put in a bag and placed in a solution for a day.
The first feeding of carrots
The first feeding in spring is done after the appearance of 2-3 true leaves. This vegetable is picky about the content of potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen in the soil. When adding potassium salt, it is better to use a complex with a low chlorine content. Also, the vegetable reacts well to sodium and magnesium.
Fertilizers with nitrogen in the composition are applied carefully. With an excess of this substance, the tops wither, the root weakens. The fruit begins to branch out and quickly deteriorate during storage.
Carrot fruits are sensitive to the concentration of the soil solution. Because of this, all top dressing is carried out only in liquid form, watering the aisle.
For the first feeding, use 150 g of mineral fertilizer per 1 sq. m, including:
- potassium - 60 g;
- nitrogen - 50 g;
- phosphorus - 40 g.
After 2 weeks, a second feeding is carried out using a half dose of fertilizer:
- ammonium nitrate - 20 g;
- superphosphate - 30 g;
- potassium chloride - 30 g.
There are other options for feeding in the spring. You can water the aisle with a solution of nitroammofoska. For 10 liters of water add 1 tbsp. l. nitroammophoska or nitrophoska. Also prepare solutions from 1 tbsp. l. potassium sulfate and 1 tbsp. l. azofoski.
To make the fruits sweeter, the tops are sprayed with humates (1 g per 10 l of water). Useful substances are transferred from foliage to fruits.
With a lack of potassium in the soil, the beds are sprayed with a 2% solution of magnesium sulfate.
Conclusion
Carrots are an unpretentious vegetable, but they are demanding on the potassium content in the soil. This is important for the correct formation of the fruit, so you should not neglect the fertilizer for carrots when planting in spring.
To make the harvest better, organic matter is applied after harvesting. Top dressing from nitrogen and phosphorus is carried out twice during the growing season. Correct fertilization increases the yield.
