Variety characteristic

The name Rote Riesen, which translates from German as "Red Giant", was given by German breeders.

Features of Rote Riesen carrots:

  • characterized by late maturation, which occurs after 140-160 days from the moment the first shoots appear.
  • high yield - from 2.1 to 3.7 kg / m²;
  • the variety of this carrot is intended for planting in open ground without prior germination;
  • the resistance of the root crop to cold and frost, therefore it is often sown before winter;
  • the sweetness and juiciness of the fruit makes it possible to use it for making juice;
  • good keeping quality of the root crop allows it to be stored for a long time without loss of taste and appearance;
  • with proper care, there is a high resistance to diseases and pests.

Description of the bush

Rote Risen's tops are dense, tall, and dark green in color. By the time of ripening, individual dry stems may appear. Often the length of the green part of the plant does not correspond to the length of the root crop itself.

Description of the fetus

According to the description, the Red Giant is a large variety of carrots, its length reaches 22-25 cm, the diameter sometimes exceeds 6 cm.The weight of the root crop on average reaches 80-100 g, but there are specimens weighing 150 g each. The shape is closer to conical, blunt at the end , with a thin ponytail of medium length. The core is medium or large in size. The color of the fruit is either orange or orange-red.

Growing varieties

The Red Giant variety prefers a sunny location.

Sandy loam or light loamy soil with a deep arable layer, which is capable of allowing moisture to pass through, is suitable. To give the soil such characteristics, a little sand is added. Carrots grow well in places where cabbage, onions, tomatoes, early potatoes, cucumbers were grown last year.

The preparation of the earth should be done in the fall: dig up, remove the old roots, pebbles. Repeat the same procedure in the spring before planting. Next, the soil is fertilized with a solution of nitrate or urea. It is recommended not to use organic fertilizer in the form of manure, because it provokes a curvature of the shape of root crops.

Sowing is carried out in late April - early May, when the soil is able to warm up to 10 ° C. Some plant carrots at 4 ° C, as the variety is known for its cold resistance. For better germination, the seeds are placed on a damp gauze in a cool place for a week.

Sweet and juicy carrots

The beds are prepared shallow, on average 2-3 cm, at a distance of 20-30 cm from each other. They are poured with a small amount of warm water, which should settle. When the moisture is absorbed, the seeds are sown at a distance of 4-7 cm.Sometimes, in order to keep the gap, they are glued to adhesive tape in advance, which in the future will not prevent the sprouts from sprouting in any way. The beds are covered with soil, but not watered - this can provoke the formation of a crust and complicate the germination of seedlings.

Care features

  1. For active growth of carrots, weeds are regularly removed as they appear. Sometimes this action is carried out even before the germination of seedlings. Harmful plants remaining in the garden can damage root crops, taking all the nutrients from the soil.
  2. Wanting to get large fruits, they thin out the rows of carrots after the first pair of true leaves appear. A distance not exceeding 4 cm is observed. The second thinning is carried out in the presence of two pairs of true leaves, the perimeter is doubled.
  3. Loosen the soil so that air and water can get to the root system of the plants. In addition, the crust formed on the surface of the soil provokes the curvature of root crops even while maintaining a large mass. Rows of carrots are piled up after the rain so that the peeping tops do not turn green due to soil subsidence.

Watering and fertilizing

It is better to water Rote Riesen every day, especially in drought, but in small quantities. The depth of moisture is directly related to the size of the root crop. Insufficient water will lead to bitterness and lethargy in carrots, and excessive watering will cause root crops to crack.

Useful substances to support the growth and development of the Red Giant should be added twice during the growing season. The first feeding is carried out 3-4 weeks after the emergence of sprouts, the second - after 2 months. For better assimilation, fertilizers are applied in liquid form, diluted in water. To do this, use one of the ingredients:

  • two glasses of wood ash;
  • 1 tbsp nitrophoski;
  • 20 g of potassium nitrate, 15 g of urea, 15 g of double superphosphate.

Pests and diseases

Pests

The most common pest in carrots is the carrot fly.

It affects the leaves, which then curl up into tubes and become bronze. To get rid of the insect, they practice early sowing of the variety against the background of deep plowing of the soil. They also monitor moderation of watering, regular thinning of rows and removal of weeds. Remedies against carrot flies are dusting the leaves with tobacco dust with ash, spraying with Intavir, Actellik preparations.

The wireworm is a small yellow worm that feeds on the underground part of the plant. To get rid of it, gardeners apply fertilizers containing ammonia. Liming of the soil and the use of appropriate insecticides are also popular.

The consequences of the defeat of carrots by bears are wilting and deformation of the stems and fruits. The fight against such a pest consists in the direct removal of insects.

As a preventive measure, carry out a deep digging of the soil in the fall. When insects appear, spray the plants with light solutions of washing powder, pepper infusion, and kerosene.

Diseases

The Rote Riesen carrot variety is known for its disease resistance.

In exceptional cases, the plant is affected by Alternaria or Phomosis. Take preventive measures - spray the beds before planting with a 1% solution of Bordeaux mixture. The introduction of potash fertilizers into the soil also helps.

Conclusion

Rote Riesen carrots are the leader among late-ripening root crops due to their taste and appearance preservation during wintering. It is not difficult to grow this variety. To get a rich harvest, carrots are protected from pests and diseases.
