Manufacturing of supports for wine drinking
When growing grapes, it is important to have a supporting structure that can withstand the load of the vine and at the same time ensure its growth, allowing for an even distribution of sunlight. The grape support can be designed by hand.
Purpose and varieties
Grapes are a perennial liana-like shrub that, as it grows, requires free space to stretch out branches, providing good air access and an even distribution of heat. Support structures allow creating favorable conditions for high-quality plant care and avoiding thickening, which prevents the appearance of bacterial and fungal infectious diseases.
Types of structures
Support buildings do:
- straight columnar,
- in the form of a semi-arched canopy,
- in the form of an arch.
Depending on the area of the vineyard and the size of the grape bushes, the supporting structures are made single-plane or double-sheet.
Single-plane construction
A single-plane trellis is more often used when forming a vineyard in the country in small garden plots, when the grape bushes are still small.
The advantage of using single-sheet trellises is the speed of their assembly and the simplicity of constructing a support for grapes with your own hands. At the same time, the vine is distributed with the necessary uniformity over the support plane, allowing the berries to ripen at the same time and creating accessibility and convenience for high-quality care.
A single-sheet trellis is not suitable for the cultivation of tall varietal varieties.
Double-cavity design
The double-leaf trellis is convenient for growing horticultural crops in large areas allocated for a vineyard with sufficient space. Its advantage is the ability to plant additional grape bushes without harming already growing plants, without limiting free space. Double-leaf trellis creates more favorable conditions for pollination of garden crops and subsequent harvest. The shady space underneath is often used as a place for the construction of a gazebo.
Making a columnar structure
A straight columnar type of support structure is a row of pillars and a wire or cable stretched through them.
When making with your own hands, the support pillars are mounted at intervals of 2.5-3 m from each other. The optimal height of each pillar is up to 2-2.5 m, the diameter is 7-10 cm. The depth to which the supports are buried, ensuring the reliability of the structure, is at least 0.5 m. To give the foundation strength, the pillars buried in the ground are concreted.
Materials for the manufacture of support pillars:
- metal,
- wood,
- concrete.
If wooden beams are used as support pillars, they are coated with an antiseptic agent before installation to increase their service life. The metal support is treated with anti-corrosion paint and varnish coatings.
Single-sheet
Intermediate posts are installed at intervals of 3-4 m from each other. Galvanized wire or cable is pulled between the installed support pillars, fixing them with a metal bracket, ring or corner. The optimal distance between the wire rows is 40 cm. Usually 3 rows are enough, but the creation of 4-5 is considered a more productive option, while the first row is pulled at a distance of 0.5-1 m from the earth's surface.
Two-sheath
The two-sheath design scheme is similar. In this case, the distance between the planes is made at 1-1.5 m. The wire is pulled according to the same principle, starting from a distance of 0.5-1 m from the ground, while maintaining the interval between rows of 40-50 cm.
The design uses T-shaped or V-shaped trellises.
Making an arch and a semi-arch
Most often, growers use semi-arched types of support structures, especially to solve the problem of limited space in the garden plot, combining the original building with the organization of recreation places under the shadow created by the vine.
The semi-arched structure makes it possible to grow grapes in only 1 row, but creates conditions for the cultivation of several varietal varieties with different ripening periods.
Arched vine supports are suitable for areas with large planting areas. They are more complicated in execution, they involve the cultivation of grapes in 2 rows.
To make a support for grapes in the form of arches and semi-arches, you need:
- arcs calculated in the required amount depending on the length of the supporting structure; they are suitable for wooden slats, plastic pipes,
- racks buried in the ground, a metal pipe 20-40 mm is suitable for them,
- crossbeams, which are used as pipes 10-20 mm,
- steel wire with a diameter of 3-4 mm, it is pulled between the uprights and crossbars.
Conclusion
A support for vines is a construction required when growing a horticultural crop. It's really possible to make it yourself using different materials.
