Tying the vine
Vineyard care is complex and has many features. The most important thing is the correct garter of the vine. The growth of the planted crop, its health and yield depend on how the grape tie is made.
Why tie up grapes
Tying grapes is important due to the nature of the culture. It is a tall but brittle plant. Without a support in place, it is prone to injury. Before the beginning of the growing season and pruning of dry branches with pruning shears, growers attach weak shoots to supports and trellises.
It is important to consider human convenience when performing crop care activities. If you install a reliable support, the bush will be convenient to water, spray, prune, etc. If the plant is old and massive, the grower will get a good shade area in the summer.
Why and what to fasten the vine
The need to install a trellis at the vineyard arises after a year from planting. When growing a young plant, tying to pegs is required. When the bushes grow more than 50 cm in height, the plants are tied to a trellis made of pipes or timber.
For the manufacture of trellises, metal or wooden posts 2.5-3 m long are needed, as well as galvanized wire. The installation of the structure is done as follows:
- The pillars are driven in to a depth of 0.5-1 m so that the distance between them is at least 3 m.
- The first row of wire is pulled at a height of 40 cm from the ground.
- The next 2 rows of wire are placed at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other.
The wire is fastened with metal brackets or special holes are drilled in the pipes for it. Reliable elastic materials help to tie up the grapes correctly. Fabric strips and textile cords are often used. Wire or fishing line is not used: their use can harm the cultivated crop.
Also, the "Cambric" agrotube made of PVC material helps to tie up the grapes.
There is a tapener for garter grapes. This device allows you to quickly and efficiently tie the desired parts of the plant, akin to a stapler. Such a machine pays off only with frequent use. For rare work in the country, it is more advisable to tie up the culture without using a tool.
The position of the vine on the trellis
The grower himself determines the position of the branches on the trellis:
- Vertical. Suitable for old non-covering bushes. Due to the vertical position, fruiting parts are exposed, and last year's parts are lengthened.
- At an angle. Favorably affects the growth of last year's branches. The apical parts develop more slowly.
- Horizontally. The plant develops fully. The bunches are fed and ripen evenly.
Novice growers are not recommended to place branches vertically because of the complexity of the operation and the possible risk of poor development of the middle part of the bush. For intensive growth and development of young shoots, it is important to bend the branches at a slight angle or place them horizontally.
Performing an operation
There are 2 ways to carry out the grape garter operation: dry and green.
A distinctive feature of the first is the state of the plant at the time of the event. You have to tie up the plant before bud break. The vine is tied up like this:
- On the installed trellis, perennial sleeves of bushes are fastened in a fan or semi-fan pattern.
- On the second tier, shoots are attached, carefully bending them at an angle of 45-60 ° C (other options are also possible: in an arc or horizontally).
- The intermediate fasteners can be free, and the extreme ones - rigid.
The green method is carried out when young shoots grow up by 30-40 cm.Longering, the shoots become more vulnerable to winds. To avoid possible problems, they are mounted vertically or at a slight angle.
Recommendations for beginners
Not only the methods and schemes of tying are important, but also the knowledge of individual nuances of the effectiveness of work in the vineyard.
Novice gardeners, when tying grapes, are prohibited from attaching a thin shoot behind the upper bud. Due to bad weather conditions or a person's carelessness, the bush runs the risk of being damaged. Other nuances are also important:
- The correct garter of grapes is made with elastic lightweight materials. Rough use of line or wire will squeeze it.
- Use the "figure eight" scheme, bending around the wire and the plant shoot with a garter material. The best place is under a leaf bud.
- The tying operation is performed carefully, without bending the vine too much. The lines must be smooth, otherwise the plant's nutritional system will be disrupted and it will die.
Using all these recommendations, it will not be difficult to do the right work in the garden. In the summer, it remains only to monitor the growth of the planted bushes and in a timely manner to tie the grapes to the stretched wires.
Conclusion
The grape tie is carried out after winter and the pruning of dry shoots of the planted culture is completed. For this, elastic materials are used: cloth scraps, textile ropes and polyethylene strips. To tie faster, you need a special gun - a tapener.
