General recommendations

Despite its unpretentiousness, it is advisable to grow onions following practical advice. The future harvest will depend on the correct planting and proper care of the crop.

  1. The culture grows well on dry soil with an average acidity. If necessary, the soil is recommended to be limed. Spring planting involves additional processing of the soil in the fall: peat or rotted manure is introduced into it. It is undesirable to use fresh organic matter - it contributes to the active development of ground greenery, infringes on the development of the vegetable.
  2. The distance between the rows is 20-30 cm. The high density will not allow the crop to reach its maximum size. If you plant onions on feathers, the row spacing can be 10-15 cm.
  3. The site must be regularly cleaned of weed grass, this will allow the young plant to grow stronger faster.
  4. After planting, watered once every 7 days. When the culture is fully formed, the procedure is carried out less frequently to avoid rotting of the bulbous fruits. Moistening is completely stopped before harvesting.
  5. Potassium-phosphorus elements, complex fertilizers and organic substances are used as top dressing.
  6. The yellowing of the feather and its lying on the surface of the earth indicates that the time has come for harvesting vegetables.

When to plant onions for seedlings

Depending on the growing region, variety and site (greenhouse or open space), onions begin to be sown in February-March or April-May.

Particular attention is paid to the lunar calendar - it determines the period of favorable planting, in which the onion harvest will be as abundant as possible. A correctly chosen day has a positive effect on the growth of culture, its development and fruiting.

Sowing in a greenhouse in 2019 will be successful if you carry out the procedure:

  • in February - 6-8, 12-13, 17;
  • in March - 10-12, 15-16.

Suitable for planting in open ground:

  • April - 29-30;
  • May - 8-10, 13-16.

Unfavorable days for planting

Do not plant onions on the following days:

  • 4-5, 18-19 - in February;
  • 3-4, 6, 17-18, 21, 30-31 - in March;
  • 27-28 - in April;
  • 5, 11-12, 19 - in May.

Also, at this time, it is impossible to carry out actions related to the growth or development of plants of this family.

Preparing for landing

Onion sets or seeds are used as planting material. They should be approximately the same size, look healthy, without damage, putrefactive diseases or rotting away.

  1. The seeds are placed in rows on the garden bed at a distance of 1-2 cm. When shoots appear, some of them are removed.
  2. The sevok should be planted in the soil to a depth of no more than 5 cm, 9-10 cm are left between the plants (if the culture is grown on greens - 5-6 cm).

Stages

10-14 days before sowing, the seeds should be dried in the microwave for 4-5 minutes. at full power or bake in the oven for 15 minutes at 200 ° C.

It is better to sow in the soil disinfected with a saturated solution of manganese, then cover it with a film material and keep it in a warm place for a while.

A characteristic feature of onion seeds is that they lose their germination in a short time. When purchasing them, pay special attention to the expiration date.

For disinfection, the seeds are placed in a gauze cloth and immersed in a warm, weak solution of potassium permanganate for 1 hour. After that, they are soaked for a day in a growth stimulator. At the end of all procedures, they are dried to a loose state.

Transplanting seedlings

2 months after sowing (end of April), when 3-4 feathers appear on the seedlings, it can be planted in an open area (if the soil has warmed up).

10-14 days before that, it is recommended to start hardening young plants, taking them out to the veranda or other cool place every day. This must be done gradually, providing an opportunity for the sprouts to gradually get used to new conditions.

Garden bed preparation

The landing site should be in an open area so that the sun's rays can freely illuminate it.

The soil should be fertile, onions give preference to sandy loam soils, fertilized with rotted humus, peat, wood ash and complex fertilizing.

Before the culture procedure, the bed is leveled, rows are made on it with a depth of 3-5 cm. The distance between them is 25-30 cm. The finished furrows are thoroughly shed with water.

Process description

Seedlings are sorted by size, all low-quality or weak seedlings are removed from the total mass. The feathers are cut to a third of their length, this will not allow moisture to evaporate too actively. The root system is also shortened.

After that, the sprouts are transferred into a mixture consisting of an infusion of clay and mullein. Seedlings are placed in a row, leaving 10-15 cm between them (when planting the Exibishen variety - at least 20 cm).

The seedlings are deepened by 1-1.5 cm more than it was in the seedling containers, sprinkled with soil, and slightly tamped.

For the fastest adaptation of young plants to new conditions, the next day the garden bed is watered with a humate solution. And when moisture penetrates, the surface of the site is mulched.

It is advisable to plant onion seedlings in the ground in dry, gloomy weather in the late afternoon. If the spring is cold, threatens with night frosts, it is better to insulate the seedlings using metal arcs, on which it is convenient to place the covering material.

Features of planting of different varieties

Bow Exhibit

In areas with warm climatic conditions, Exhibichen onions are grown directly through planting seeds in open ground.

In Siberia, the Urals and other northern regions, this varietal crop is planted exclusively by the seedling method.

The 2019 sowing calendar recommends the following days:

  • May - 1,2,3,4,20,21,22,23,26-31.

Previously, the seeds are soaked for several hours in warm, disinfected water, with the addition of potassium permanganate or hydrogen peroxide, after which they are placed in a humid environment (cloth), and kept in this state in a warm place for 2-3 days.

Leek

It is noted that the process is practically no different from the cultivation of ordinary onions, with the exception of some nuances.

  1. Seeds are spread on the surface of fertile soil, sprinkled on top with a thin layer of soil and moistened with warm water using a spray bottle.
  2. The boxes covered with foil are placed in a warm place until the first shoots appear. Ventilate the seedlings daily and remove excess moisture (condensation) from the cover.

Sowing leeks are recommended:

  • January - 10, 11, 15, 16;
  • February - 1, 2, 23-28;
  • March - 1-4, 21-31;
