Choosing the time for landing

The timing of planting onions in the Moscow region may be different. For growing onions in this suburbs, both pre-winter planting in late autumn and planting crops at the onset of spring are suitable.

If you plant onions in the Moscow region in winter, then this allows you to keep the seedlings in the soil layer at sub-zero temperatures, while storing it in a closed room, especially in a basement, leads to the turnip drying out due to dry and cold air and the appearance of fungal diseases. To plant sows preserved in such conditions means to doom the future harvest to death.

Growing a winter onion from a set for the Moscow region, you can be sure that it will not grow into an arrow, and this makes it possible to get a good harvest from it after a while (usually a year).

In addition to the fact that in a closed space, seedlings are stored less favorably than when they are in the soil, planted in open ground in late autumn, its stay underground will give an impetus to growth in spring exactly when climatic conditions are favorable for it. The owner of the garden does not need to worry about whether it is possible to sow the crop or it is too early. Unstable spring weather near Moscow often deceives gardeners, misleading them about the timing of planting a vegetable crop, as a result of which onions often freeze in the soil when late frosts come in spring.

Overview of varieties

Among the cultivated varieties of onions for the Moscow region there are those that are suitable for greenhouses, those that grow better in the open field, and those that give a good harvest in the conditions of the Moscow climate.

We comply with the landing dates

The vegetable planted on open ground before the winter frosts is preserved in the soil and gives a good harvest in the future. As a recommendation, professional gardeners advise to start planting the best varieties of onions for growing in the Moscow region at the end of September, from about the 20th to the 30th, or do it during October. In the case when it was not possible to prepare the seed for planting, it is better to postpone the date to the end of November.

It is possible to sow onion crops in the soil when the temperature on the thermometer is kept for 2-3 days at about 4-6 ° C.

It is not recommended to plant onions in open ground earlier than half of September, since otherwise the plant may give out an arrow even before the onset of frost and subsequently die. But you should not also delay planting in unstable weather, since the turnip must take root before the cold weather, otherwise it will freeze.
