Planting garlic in 2018 according to the lunar calendar
Planting lunar garlic is a great way to get bountiful harvests. The planting calendar is a great help for gardeners and summer residents. Thanks to him, you can find out not only when to plant garlic, but also when to water, weed and dig it out.
In the old days, our ancestors were always guided by the phase of the moon when it came to working in the field. Many of these traditions have resonated with omens. Now, in order to correctly plant a particular culture, it is enough just to look at the lunar calendar.
The influence of the lunar phases
Every gardener needs to know when and how to plant crops in his garden. Most of them rely on their own experience or advice from acquaintances, but this is fundamentally wrong.
The influence of the lunar phases on the growth and development of plants has been proven by scientists. During the experiments, it was found that:
- seeds planted on new moons absorb moisture and nutrients dissolved in it worse and grow worse from this;
- plants planted on a waning moon or on a new moon absorb moisture better and develop better;
Harvesting is recommended to be carried out on the new moon, because during this period the plant contains a lower percentage of water and vegetables and fruits will be stored better. The position of Saturn in relation to the Moon also plays an important role. It has a positive effect on stamina and firmness of plantings.
Winter planting
The lunar landing calendar in 2018 recommends landing from August to December.
You should not blindly follow these tips, because the timing of garlic directly depends on the region. Most often, sowing occurs in September - October, and sometimes in November - December. In the south, where frosts come late, planting can be postponed to a later date, but in the north, this should be done much earlier.
When allowed
Favorable days for planting garlic on the moon in 2018:
- August - 14, 15, 31;
- September - 2, 10, 11, 12, 13, 19,26, 30;
- October - 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12;
- November - 5, 6, 7, 14;
- December - 5, 8, 11, 14.
You can plant on other days, but the yield in this case is greatly reduced. Among other things, you need to take into account the weather conditions on the day of landing. Garlic should be planted in dry weather, until the first snow falls and the ground begins to freeze.
There are also unfavorable days on which it is not recommended to plant garlic. This is due to the growing moon and the special position of Jupiter in relation to it.
When not allowed
You should not plant winter crops on such days:
- August - 2, 7, 11, 16, 18, 21;
- September - 1, 6, 16, 20;
- October - 5, 16, 19;
- November - 4, 8, 9, 10, 18;
- December - 1, 2, 3, 18, 29, 30, 31.
Before working in the garden, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the meteorological forecast. From the moment of placing the cloves, one-toothed teeth and bulbs in the ground, at least 2 weeks must pass before the first frost on the ground, otherwise the planting material will simply freeze out.Seeds are less sensitive to this, but planting them in frozen ground is also not recommended.
How to properly plant winter garlic
The seed for winter growing does not need to be prepared in advance. The cloves are simply separated from each other and sorted by size, and those affected by mold or dry are thrown away.
In order to get a winter harvest, you need to choose the right garlic. Its spring varieties are not suitable for this. It is quite easy to distinguish them, just look at the head:
- In winter varieties, there is a dense core inside, around which large cloves are located. The slices have a very dense shell, and the head itself is covered with 3-4 layers of dry husk.
- The spring varieties do not have a stem, and the cloves are arranged in several rows. The husk is very thin in one layer.
The teeth are planted in trenches 10–12 cm deep at a distance of 5 cm from each other.
Gardeners are advised to pre-fertilize the soil. Wood ash, rotted humus, is excellent for this. If there is a threat of frost, then the beds are covered with fallen leaves from any trees other than walnuts. You can also use straw or grass cuttings.
Spring planting
The lunar calendar for 2018 recommends planting garlic of spring varieties quite early. As soon as the snow melts and it becomes possible to work on the ground, the crop is planted in the garden. In Belarus, Ukraine and the South of Russia, this happens in April - May. In regions with colder climates, these dates are shifted to the end of May.
When allowed
Favorable for planting garlic according to the lunar calendar in 2018:
- March - 14.15, 18, 23, 27,
- 29, 30;
- April - 8, 14, 18, 26, 29;
- May - 1, 2, 4, 10, 11, 23, 27.
On these days, sowing crops will bring excellent yields, and the plants themselves will grow better and less sick. Despite the fact that the yield of spring varieties is slightly lower than that of winter varieties, their shelf life is much longer. Sowing cloves on the waning moon guarantees the safety of the crop up to 2 years. Even in this case, the seed does not lose its germination.
When not allowed
Unfavorable days:
- March - 8, 16, 21, 22;
- April - 4, 19, 20, 25, 27;
- May - 3, 9, 21, 24.
It is not recommended to plant a culture on such days, it is better to do other work in the garden, especially since there are so many of them in the spring. Sowing on unfavorable days can cause the heads to rot during storage.
How to properly plant spring garlic
Due to the nature of the growing season, spring varieties must be prepared 1-2 days before sowing. They are placed in a container in one row and covered with a wet cloth or gauze. It is not recommended to soak the cloves directly in water, as this can provoke their rotting. To speed up germination, they can be soaked in specialized solutions that can be purchased at seed stores.
You need to plant garlic in the spring in less deep beds than the one that is sown in the fall. The planting depth is no more than 5 cm, and the distance between plants remains unchanged - 5 cm. This distance is sufficient for normal growth and head formation.
Fertilizers are applied to the soil before sowing. For good crop growth, it is necessary to fertilize with urea, humus, rotted mullein and wood ash.
Lunar garlic care
Not only sowing depends on the phases of the moon and the position of Jupiter, but the care of plants is also carried out according to the same principle. Compliance with the order of actions regarding garlic helps gardeners navigate the periods of planting care.
Watering the garlic is also recommended according to the lunar calendar. If it is planted in the fall, then it is not necessary to water it, the first time this is done in May - June, depending on the weather and the amount of precipitation. The same goes for hilling and loosening the earth.
Auspicious days for the care of the culture:
- April - 10, 11, 15, 19, 28, 30;
- May - 4, 9, 15, 18, 23;
- June - 1, 3, 6, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 26;
- July - 4, 8, 11, 13, 17, 22, 30;
- August - 9, 14, 15, 16.
Stop watering 2 weeks before harvesting, otherwise excess moisture in the cloves will lead to rotting and cracking of the shells. It is recommended to dig it up on August 11, 12, 16 and 20. These times may vary depending on the weather. Doing this on a growing moon is not recommended.
Special attention should be paid to cutting the arrows. If the garlic was planted in the spring, then they do it on June 18, 19 and 22. If sowing was carried out in the fall, then on May 23 and 24. It is important not to waste time in removing the arrows, because the plant spends a lot of energy on flowering and seed formation. Because of this, the head stops growing and remains small.
Conclusion
If you adhere to the rules of sowing garlic in 2018, you can get good yields. Despite the fact that the lunar calendar gives advice about the planting time of the culture, it is not recommended to blindly follow them. There are many reasons why sowing garlic on one day or another is irrational.
Caring for plantings according to the lunar calendar also gives its results. Timely watered and hilled garlic develops better, and the heads are formed larger and stronger.
