What is the effectiveness

There are many popular ways to combat weeds, one of the most popular is vinegar-based (up to 80%).

It is a good alternative to agricultural chemical herbicides. Penetration occurs through the surface layers of vegetative parts, incl. aboveground (leaves, stems, inflorescences) and underground (roots).

Poison action:

  • destroys the membranes of cells, leading to their death;
  • slows down, and in some cases completely neutralizes the process of photosynthesis and exchange in the cellular composition.
  • as a result, no organic matter is formed in plants, nutrition is disturbed, it withers and dies.

Advantages and disadvantages

Pros:

  • Ease of preparation and low cost of the resulting working solution;
  • Toxic substances, when used correctly, do not accumulate in vegetables;
  • Relative safety for human and animal health;
  • Active effect on all types of weeds;
  • Additionally, it acts as a folk remedy for getting rid of pests and infections;
  • Fast result and duration of action.

Minuses:

Continuous mechanism: the destructive effect of acids occurs on all plants, i.e. in case of violation of the rules of application, it is possible to destroy vegetable bushes and fruit bushes.

Working solution recipes

Often gardeners treat the area with vinegar essence in its pure form, without adding additional components:

  • 9% is enough to combat young weeds;
  • to destroy perennial weeds, mix 40% acid and water in a 1: 1 ratio.

A weak solution is not only a plant killer. He copes well with the invasion of the summer cottage garden of insects. So, it will help get rid of ants if you poison them in the place of the main congestion.

Recipes with additional ingredients are shown in the table:

ComponentsEfficiencyProportions and rules of application
With saltAllows you to quickly get rid of weeds.Add 5 tablespoons to 1 liter of boiling water. vinegar essence with a concentration of 40% and 2 tablespoons of coarse table salt.

The beds are poured with a hot solution.

Alternative method: first destroy the weeds with acid (2 tablespoons per 0.5 liters of water), then sprinkle with salt to consolidate the result.

With salt and soapThis treatment extends the duration of the exposure to the weeds.

The substance reliably adheres to the surface of vegetative parts of plants and helps to remove unnecessary grass for a long time.

For 1 liter of water 150 g of coarse table salt, 1 tbsp. soap, 5 tbsp. essences with a concentration of 15%.

To prepare the working solution, both laundry soap and liquid soap or dishwashing detergent are suitable.The main thing is that the composition does not contain toxic substances - phenols and phosphates.

With sodaThis substance simultaneously acts as an antiseptic that protects vegetable crops from pathogenic bacteria.

Powdery mildew is one of the infections that baking soda does well.

2 tbsp soda, 5 tbsp. acetic acid with a concentration of 9%, 1 tbsp. household or liquid soap for 2.5 liters of water.

The site is treated three times, with an interval of 1 week.

With lemonEnhanced impact.Mix vinegar (15% or more) and citric acid (3: 1).
With essential oilsThey have weed-destructive properties and the ability to repel pests.

For example, oils with lavender, cloves, orange or juniper will be repellent for insects.

For 1 liter of acid with a concentration of 15% or more, 1 tbsp of a suitable ester.
With alcoholEnhanced impact.400 ml of vinegar essence (9%), 2 tbsp. citric acid, 2 tbsp. soap or detergent (for example, Fairy), 50 ml of vodka or 20 ml of alcohol, 600 ml of water.
With brilliant greenNot only copes with weeds, but also protects the soil from pests and pathogenic bacteria, because brilliant solution has antiseptic properties.10 ml of brilliant green, 1 l of water, 1 tbsp. vinegar essence with a concentration of 6% to 9%.

Processing rules

The most optimal treatment with vinegar against weeds is the method of spraying the leaves and inflorescences from a spray bottle. Watering at the root acts as an addition and helps to avoid their return.

The tall grass is initially pruned and the herbicide is applied to the remaining root zone.

Juice processing activities:

  • against annual weeds - up to the stage of flowering and seed formation, i.e. from the beginning to the last third of spring;
  • against perennial weeds - in the fall, when there is an active accumulation of nutrients before winter.

The result from use becomes noticeable after 2-3 days. For particularly resistant weed species, spraying is repeated, combined with watering.

Treatments of sites, courtyards and paths are carried out by continuous irrigation. If it is necessary to selectively apply the mixture, use brushes.

Ultraviolet rays activate the effectiveness of acids, therefore the procedure is best carried out in sunny weather.

Limitations and caveats

Vinegar treatments do not belong to selective means of combating weeds and are equally detrimental to cultural plantings. Therefore, when spraying, you should avoid getting the solution on vegetable bushes and garden flowers, or pre-cover them with plastic wrap.

Precautions:

  • use personal protective equipment - glasses, respirators, overalls;
  • to carry out processing in calm weather in the absence of precipitation at a temperature of 20 ° C and above;
  • do not allow the working fluid to come into contact with the skin and mucous membranes; in case of contact, rinse these areas immediately with running water.

When the site is massively populated with weeds, the soil is abundantly watered with a vinegar mixture, repeating watering after 2 weeks. Cultivated plants are not planted in the treated area for 2 years, until the soil structure is restored and beneficial microorganisms activate the vital activity.

Summing up

Homemade vinegar-based herbicide solutions are highly effective weed-removing agents. It helps to remove grass from overgrown beds and destroy it in the gaps between the paving slabs.

Applicable in pure form with different concentrations. There are a number of recipes with additional ingredients that will improve performance, incl. with table salt, baking soda, soap, lemon, essential oils, alcohol and brilliant green.

The chemical composition contains acids with a high concentration, therefore, when using the method, reasonable care is required. Working solutions are diluted in a certain dosage. The beds are processed according to the established rules, taking precautions.
