Sarcoscifa is a saprophytic organism that grows on decaying wood or tree branches that are covered with a layer of soil or fallen leaves. The cup-shaped boat body of marsupials, or ascomycetes - askocarp, usually appears either in late winter or early spring. The inside of it has a bright red color and contrasts sharply with the outside, much lighter part. On the territory of Russia, in the more southern regions, the sarkoscif alai is found. But in the more northern ones - the Austrian sarkoscif. It is almost impossible to distinguish them without magnifying devices. Only a magnifying glass can show that the outer surface of the ascocarp of the Austrian sarcoscif is covered with a thin layer of cannon.
