Hungarian giants
The first representatives of this breed were brought to the territory of modern Hungary a long time ago. It is believed that they were brought by Byzantine traders from Turkey in the 13th century. In the USSR, this breed appeared in 1956, thanks to V. Churikov, a famous Russian pigeon breeder. Now this breed is highly valued by Russian amateurs.
Hungarian giants are called giants for a reason. The live weight of females reaches 1000 g, the weight of males is 1300 g. This is a fertile breed. One pair can raise 10-12 chicks per year.
Hungarian monogamous giants - pairs are matched only once. Steam can be used up to a maximum of 7-8 years. You can see the Hungarian giants in more detail in the photo or video.
The appearance of the Hungarian giants
- Hungarian giants are large in size. Their distinguishing feature is their large body. The chest is wide and raised. This type is characterized by an almost horizontal posture. A large, rounded head with a wide forehead and a convex crown sits firmly on a short, thick neck. On the back of the head there is a thick lush forelock. The beak of the giants is large, slightly curved. In blue and black pigeons, the beak is dark, in birds of a different color it is usually light pink in color.
- The bird has long wings that fit tightly to the body. In comparison with him, the legs of giants are short, with a good rounded plumage. The tail is medium in size, narrow. The feather is most often monochromatic, not fitting tightly to the body. Giants are black, blue, red, yellow or mottled plumage. Sometimes there are specimens with spotted.
- The large weight of pigeons affects their maintenance. Since these birds are very heavy, they do not have good flying qualities. They are bred for decorative purposes. If the birds do not meet the standards for some parameters and cannot participate in specialized exhibitions, they are culled. These pigeons can be used as food.
Power features
Hungarian high-flying pigeons require a special diet. Only natural food of plant origin is suitable for them. Giants refuse classic compound feed. You need to think about stocks in advance. In winter, give carrots that are rich in vitamins and fiber. It is rubbed and given 1 g for each bird.
A mash of potatoes, cabbage, apples, pears, rusks, passed through a meat grinder, and grass flour are added to grain mixtures. You should also use wheat bran. During the period of vitamin deficiency, it is necessary to additionally give fortified supplements.

To keep birds healthy and active, you need to provide them with daily care. First of all, it is necessary to maintain cleanliness and disinfect the walls in the poultry house. This will help protect walls and floors from mold. Some farmers whitewash the walls with lime to prevent mold from growing indoors.
It is also important to observe the recommended humidity; for this, a ventilation system is installed. When fresh air prevails in the room, pigeons feel better and there is less fighting.
Useful Tips
High-flying pigeons love freedom, you cannot have birds if you plan to keep them locked up in a cage all the time. Individuals must fly every day, it is best to start training from short distances so that the pigeons do not get lost and find their way home.
Drinking water should be at room temperature and clean. Due to dirty water, pigeons are able to pick up viral infections.
The feeder and drinker should be cleaned with disinfectants at least once a day so that pathogenic bacteria do not accumulate on them.
If you follow these rules for the care and breeding of flying birds, even a novice poultry breeder will be able to raise and train flying pigeons that will take part in exhibitions and flying competitions.
