Selection of cuttings

In order for the plant to take root, it is important to choose the right shoot from which a part will be cut. From strong branches that grow upward, weak seedlings are obtained. It is better to choose side shoots that do not grow too vigorously.

If one long branch is used for propagation by cuttings and cut into several parts, then it is important from which one the cutting will be taken. Parts from the lower part of the stem take root faster.

Hydrangea breeding methods

Hydrangea is propagated in autumn by cuttings both in amateur gardening and on an industrial scale.

There are several effective ways to do this, the most popular is reproduction in soil and in water.

First you need to prepare the following materials:

  • loose soil;
  • vermiculite;
  • containers for planting;
  • clean water at room temperature;
  • sharp pruning shears or garden shears;
  • different types of drainage;
  • vitamins to stimulate rooting.

Propagation by cuttings in the ground

For this planting option, cuttings of plants that have already faded are taken.

You need to dig up the shoots and clear them of the ground. Next, shears or scissors cut off all dry and damaged processes.

It is important that at least 5 flower buds remain on the shoot. Then the top is separated. The best cut size for planting is 13-16 cm. Do not take branches from unhealthy plants. After cutting, the planting material is left in a solution of antibacterial agents and fungicides.

Reproduction in water

This method is more difficult and requires certain gardening skills.

Even with minor violations of the rules of agricultural technology, the planting material can rot and deteriorate.

First, cuttings of paniculate hydrangea are prepared and all the foliage is cut off from them. The length of one is from 12 to 18 cm. Part of the plant above the last leaf bud is also cut off.

Further it is necessary:

  1. Place the cuttings in a bowl of room temperature water. You can add vitamins to it.
  2. Landing in a transparent glass container. This will allow more light to enter and the roots will begin to develop faster.
  3. The water needs to be changed daily to prevent decay. When the roots appear at least 2 cm, the plant is ready for planting.

Propagation by cuttings from a bush

This is one of the most affordable ways. It is suitable for a young and strong bush. Choose one branch of medium length, gently bent it so that it touches the ground. A small hole is preliminarily prepared and a vitamin substrate is poured into it, the depth should be 10-15 cm.

Then you will need:

  • lower a branch into it, sprinkle with soil and cover with foil;
  • press down with a brick or other heavy object;
  • water so that the soil is always moist.

After 1.5-2 weeks, the film is removed and the condition of the root is examined. If it is not sufficiently formed, the pressure is strengthened with an additional brick and left for another week.

When the root system of the panicle hydrangea forms, the cutting is cut from the bush and planted in a new place. When digging up a seedling, it is important not to damage the clod.

Indoor breeding

This option is suitable for cutting the plant in the fall in indoor conditions. The seedlings are rooted in a vase with a special substrate. First, a mixture of sand and nutrient soil is prepared in a 1: 1 ratio. This mixture is poured into a planting container and watered abundantly with water.

Cuttings are cut at a height of no more than 15 cm. The cut points should be 6 cm higher and lower than the extreme leaf bud. Then, all the foliage is cut to stimulate root growth.

How to propagate:

  1. Place in solution to stimulate growth. It is better to use a ready-made store composition and leave the seedlings in it for a day.
  2. Pits are prepared in the soil and the soil is compacted around them. The depth of the hole must be at least 5 cm.
  3. The cuts are inserted into the holes and sprinkled with earth. Cover with a jar on top or make a small greenhouse from a film.

Water as needed, guided by the soil (it should always be wet). The air temperature is not lower than 17 ℃, the best option is 20-25 ℃.

After 3 weeks, the condition of the root system is checked. Gently lift the handle up. If there is resistance, the roots form correctly in the right volume. The plant is ready to be transplanted into a permanent location.

Conclusion

Hydrangea is a flower that is grown both indoors and outdoors. It can be propagated independently by grafting.

There are several ways to propagate panicle hydrangea. Best of all - from the mother bush, in the water and indoor. Subject to the rules of planting and care, autumn reproduction will be successful and the root will quickly form.
