Exotic Hoya flower - description of the plant
The exotic Hoya flower belongs to the Lastovnev family. He lives in the warm climate of Asia, Australia, America, India, tropical islands. The plant was named after Thomas Hoy, an English gardener who was the first to study and grow different species in a greenhouse.
general characteristics
Hoya belongs to lianas and is also called wax ivy. She is able to branch, climbing on a support, although some species are bushy.
Flowers and leaves are dense and shiny, as if made of wax or porcelain. The root system is superficial. Umbrella inflorescences, with or without aroma.
Indoor hoya looks spectacular in any interior, which is another reason for its cultivation.
All types are different, but generally unpretentious - their maintenance at home does not present any particular problems. However, this exotic requires caution: in some sources, wax ivy is called a poisonous plant, so it should be kept away from children.

Purchase and adaptation
Adult hoya can be bought in specialty stores, but not every variety is easy to find. Many collectors or hobbyists sell cuttings for rooting through the Internet (florist communities, forums, VK, ad sites, etc.). They offer not only popular, but also rare species (the price for cuttings is much lower than for a rooted hoyka).
After purchase, the vine (or stalk) should be placed for two to three weeks separately from other plants. She is regularly examined for signs of illness. At this time, the hoya cannot be cut off, transplanted, or fed.
Landing features
Liana loves fertile, moderately moist, loose and light soils. Many species live on rocky soils, therefore they are unpretentious.
For growing hoyki, a commercially available substrate designed for orchids or succulets is suitable.
Ordinary soil can be mixed with perlite, peat, sphagnum, pieces of bark. All components must be disinfected. When planting, you need to provide a support for the vines, a stand or a planter.
Necessary growing conditions
- Hoya prefers bright, but diffused sunlight - the flowering process directly depends on this: in insufficient lighting, the vine will not bloom. It should be placed closer to the window, and artificially illuminated in winter.
- The optimum temperature is 20-22 ° C. It should not fall below 15 ° С (for some species - up to 10 ° С).
- Humidity is moderate. Spraying is useful in dry seasons. A warm bath is sometimes used to make the hoyka bloom.
Care
Regular care will provide the hoike with abundant flowering and prevent disease. Successful cultivation involves proper watering and feeding, pruning, transplanting into a larger pot (not too often).
It is not difficult to take care of the vine, but some peculiarities must be taken into account.
Watering
Liana loves moisture, but does not tolerate waterlogging. The flowerpot should have a drainage layer and holes from which excess water flows into the pan. Then it is poured out. The substrate needs to dry out before the next watering. In hot weather, water it 2-3 times a week with settled water (a little warmer than room temperature), in winter - much less often, as needed.
Top dressing
Hoya is fed with a complex of minerals, using a composition for succulents or orchids. The dosage of the substance for the volume of water specified in the instructions is halved. Top dressing is applied 3-6 times a season (summer and spring).
Pruning
Under natural conditions, pruning is not needed, but at home - the growth of the vines has to be controlled. The cut parts of the stems can be used as cuttings to propagate the Hoyka. Faded peduncles are not cut off.
Transfer
Liana does not like transplanting too much and blooms better in a small pot. But if the roots have already braided the soil and are sticking out of the drainage holes, it's time to replant. Usually the procedure is carried out every 5-6 years. Every year you can change the top layer of the earth in the flowerpot.
Reproduction
The most popular way to breed hoya at home is with cuttings. There should be a knot with two leaves on the cut section of the stem (you need to cut it 2 cm below).
The cutting must be rooted in water or immediately in the ground. The latter option is required for species with lignified shoots. For rooting, it is better to use not earth, but a substrate of expanded clay, sphagnum and peat.
Theoretically, a flower can be propagated by sowing seeds, but it is very difficult to get them at home, and it is also not easy to buy them.
