Why carry out the procedure

Tatiana Orlova (Candidate of Agricultural Sciences):

Diving tomatoes ensures proper development and growth of the root system.

Growing tomato seedlings (and not only tomatoes) with a pick allows you to save a useful area of protected ground in the first stages of growing seedlings. Seeds are sown initially thickened in order to plant them in 3-4 weeks.

Technically, the process consists in pinching the central root, so that the branching of the root system is further enhanced. In this case, the plants are transplanted into more spacious containers.

Picking allows you to select the strongest and most promising seedlings, to provide favorable conditions for it. In addition, transplanting becomes an effective treatment when pathogens appear in the soil.

For many gardeners, diving tomatoes means simply transplanting them from a common tray into separate pots, without shortening the root.

The thing is that at an early stage of growth (within a few weeks after germination), the root system of tomatoes is still very tender. When transplanting, the tip of the root is damaged in any case and the pinching occurs by itself. Purposeful shortening in this situation can only harm the plant.

Overgrown seedlings are most often dived with root pinching in order to slow down the growth of the upper part and strengthen the lower one.

Description of technology

Usually, seedlings dive at the stage of 2-3 true leaves (about 15-20 days after germination). A few hours before transplanting, the plants are watered with warm water to soften the soil and avoid excessive damage to the roots.

Separate containers are prepared: plastic cups, small flower pots, peat pots or tablets. If there is a shortage of individual containers, you can use more spacious trays, planting tomatoes in them at a greater distance.

The diameter of the pot or a new "plot" in the tray depends on the timing of transplantation and the size of the plants (5-7 cm - one and a half weeks after germination; 8-10 cm - for older seedlings).

  • Young plants with delicate roots are carefully removed from the tray along with an earthen clod using a wooden stick or spatula. Transplant them, trying not to destroy the earthen lump.
  • When diving more mature seedlings (or overgrown), the tip of the root is pinched off or shortened with nail scissors.

The soil mixture for transplanting is prepared from steamed sod land, peat and rotted compost, if desired, complex mineral fertilizers are added. At the end, the seedlings are watered under the root with warm water or manganese solution.

Tatiana Orlova (Candidate of Agricultural Sciences):

In the first 5-7 days after picking, the seedlings are not exposed to bright sun, kept in diffused light, or even shaded.

Tomatoes love to dive: after transplanting, they grow well and become strong. Therefore, two to three weeks after the first procedure, you can carry out the second (using the same technology, but in large containers).

Tatiana Orlova (Candidate of Agricultural Sciences):

It is most rational to use not cups, but special cassettes with cells for growing dived seedlings. There are different versions of cassettes with different numbers and diameters of the cells. For ordinary amateur gardeners, cassettes with 6 cells with a diameter of 5-6 cm are suitable. The cassettes have a rectangular shape, which makes it possible to more efficiently use the area of the window sill or mini-greenhouse. In addition, the seedlings in cassettes are easier to carry.

Auspicious days

Early varieties of tomatoes are often sown already in the second half of February: favorable days for sowing: February 25, 26 and 28.

And if the sowing was carried out in the first half of February, then the timing of picking tomatoes falls on the first half of March, favorable days in this period: 10, 1, 12.

If the seeds were sown in early March, the first pick is carried out in the second or third decade. Auspicious days for this will be the 16th and 19th.

Tomatoes intended for open ground are sown later - in late March or early April. In such cases, it is better to dive on April 15, 16 or 17.

If according to the terms it is necessary to carry out the procedure at the end of the month, it is better to do it on April 24 or 25.

Influence of the signs of the zodiac

It is advisable to make a pick on fertile days.

It is advisable to pick a pick on fertile days.

If necessary, diving tomatoes can be carried out on the days of the fertile signs of the zodiac.

On March 1 and 2, 2019, the Moon is in Capricorn, a fertile earth sign. Despite the waning phase, these days will be very successful for this manipulation.

March 10-1 and April 7-8 the Moon is in Taurus - these are also favorable days for a dive.

According to the calendar, from April 24 to April 26 - the Moon is waning, but is in the sign of Capricorn, so the numbers are considered suitable.

April 29 and 30 - the planet is in the sign of Pisces, which is also fertile. If necessary, you can dive on these days.

Bad days

You should not pick tomatoes on the new moon. In March, it falls on the 6th, and in April - on 4. These days it is better to plan garden works.

Also, you cannot do this during the full moon period. According to the 2019 Lunar Calendar, full moon dates are March 21 and April 19. These days are unfavorable for any gardening, except for preparatory work.

If possible, do not dive in the first 2 days after the new moon and full moon: March 7-8, April 5-6, March 22-23, April 20-21.

An unfavorable time for diving and transplanting tomatoes is the entire waning phase of the moon.

  • In March, it lasts from 1 to 5 and from 22 to 31.
  • In April, the moon decreases from 1 to 4 and from 20 to 30.
  • In May, the time of the waning moon is from 1 to 3 and from 20 to 31.

If you have to dive at these times, avoid the most unfavorable dates and give preference to the days of the fertile signs of the Zodiac.

The most unfavorable dates for a dive:

  • in March: in the first half - the 4th and 5th, in the second half - on the 25th and 31st.
  • in April: in the first half - 2 and 3 numbers, in the second - 27 numbers.

Influence of the signs of the zodiac

Do not dive and transplant on the days of barren zodiac signs (Aquarius, Aries, Gemini, Leo).

In March, these are:

  • 3rd and 4th number - the Moon is in the sign of Aquarius;
  • 8 and 9 - in the sign of Aries;
  • 13 and 14 - in the sign of Gemini;
  • 17 and 18 are in the sign of Leo.

In April:

  • from 4 to 6 the Moon is in the sign of Aries;
  • 9 and 10 - in Gemini;
  • from 13 to 15 - in Leo;
