Insecticide Taboo from the Colorado potato beetle
Among the insecticidal dressing agents that are effectively used by summer residents when growing potatoes in their personal plot is Tabu from the Colorado potato beetle. He helps gardeners not only against this parasite devouring the future crop, but also effectively fights the wireworm, protecting from their attacks on growing potato shoots.
Characteristics of the drug
The drug Tabu stands out among the many insecticidal agents at a low price and is recommended by summer residents with the already beloved Prestige fungicide for efficiency, ease of use and high reliability.
Main components
The insecticidal chemical Tabu, VSK, developed against the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm, like Prestige, is based on a substance called imidacloprid, which belongs to the class of moderately toxic neonictotinoids.
The composition of the universal dressing agent, together with a poisonous substance dangerous for the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm, includes a thickener and a surfactant, which ensures reliable adhesion of the agent.
The coloring component included in its composition simplifies the process of protecting potato tubers with a preparation, which is absolutely harmless to the vegetable, but allows you to visually see the area that has already been sprayed with an insecticidal agent. After applying the composition, the treated area turns red.
Forms and volumes of release
Most often, the agent is produced in the form of a liquid suspension with a high concentration. It is bottled in volumes of 1 and 10 liters, used for industrial purposes. For private consumers there are 10 ml containers.
Compatibility
The instruction for the insecticidal agent does not provide for its joint use when protecting potatoes against the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm. However, many experienced gardeners add preparations with fungicidal properties to the finished working composition to create additional protection against fungal diseases.
Principle and effectiveness of action
The protective mechanism of the drug's action on pests is based on the phased perception of the active substances of the insecticide by the potato crop, which is typical for herbicides:
- planting tubers are impregnated with the agent,
- with the growth of the plant, the poisonous substance grows into young green shoots.
When a pest enters the body, the poisonous substance of the drug does not act at a neurotropic level, affecting the activity of its nervous system. Initially, exposure to the active substance leads to digestive and motor paralysis, ending with respiratory paralysis. A day after entering the body, the pest has no chance of remaining alive, it dies.
Tabu insecticide is a real poison for Colorado beetles and wireworms, a single use of which is quite enough to reliably protect young shoots of planted potatoes from gluttonous pests.
The properties of the Tabu insecticide help control pests in the cultivation of both potatoes and other crops - cereals, sunflowers, legumes, flax, beets and corn.
General application procedure
According to the instructions for "Taboo, VSK", which describes in detail the composition and safety measures when using it for processing vegetable crops, there are two possible ways to process potato tubers from the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm:
- the first involves spraying potatoes prepared for planting immediately before planting them in the soil,
- in the second, processing is carried out in the process of planting potato tubers in the holes.
Regardless of the preferred method of processing potato tubers, any method you choose is guaranteed to lead to the desired result, creating reliable protection for the plant against pests.
Drying, at the site of treatment of the potato tuber, the insecticidal preparation forms a protective film on the potato, which does not crack for a long time and retains its integrity also when transporting vegetables, therefore the composition can be applied at any time before planting.
The instructions for the Tabu dressing agent provide for the standards for the classical processing of potato root crops for a certain period before planting, and directly during planting work:
- against the Colorado potato beetle, you need 8 ml of the finished product per liter volume of water, tubers need to be processed, the consumption of the prepared mixture per 100 kg of potato root crops is about a liter,
- the bottom of the bed furrow is treated against the wireworm during planting, the consumption rate will be about 10 liters per 100 square meters of planting area, while 4 ml of Tabu preparation per 100 square meters will be needed for the working fluid.
Practical tips for using an insecticide
Gardeners using the drug Tabu process their planting material in one of two possible ways, while observing simple rules.
Before boarding
The preparatory procedure for processing potato root crops before planting them in the soil attracts summer residents with its ease of implementation. A large number of potato tubers can be processed in this way at once in a minimum amount of time. At the same time, efficiency and effectiveness are preserved:
- the amount of Taboo required according to the instructions is initially diluted in a small volume of liquid (approximately 200 g of water), and then brought to the required liter volume,
- vegetables are laid out in a horizontal position on a tarpaulin or plastic wrap cover, sprayed on top and manually turned over, processing with mixing of tubers is carried out until they are evenly colored in a red tint,
- roots are planted in the soil only after they are completely dry.
The diluted working composition used in this case is sufficient, as a rule, for 100 kg of potato root crops.
In the process of planting
The insecticidal preparation Tabu, in contrast to the fungicide Prestige, which is similar in properties to it, has an additional possibility of processing the planting material laid in the holes:
- dilute the composition in the required amount initially in a liter volume of water, shaking thoroughly, subsequently bringing the working fluid to a 10 liter volume,
- the roots placed in the earthen hole are sprayed with Taboo at the rate of approximately 30-35 ml each.
Using such a method of protection, which retains its active effect from the Colorado potato beetle and wireworm for at least 60 days, you should not exceed the concentrations indicated in the instructions for the preparation, so as not to increase the risk of soil toxicity.
