Seed potatoes and varieties
seed potatoes can be safely attributed to vegetables that are least adapted to an aggressive environment. The human factor, that is, care, as well as climatic conditions, is of great importance in growing potatoes. It is worth saying that depending on the region of residence, climatic conditions can change, so it makes sense to figure out which seed material is suitable for a particular climate, what are the conditions for caring for them, how quickly they ripen, and so on. We will discuss these and other issues today.

How to choose seed potatoes
You can buy or order seed potatoes almost everywhere, from a spontaneous market to direct sale in a garden center. It is worth saying that it is customary to sell a vegetable in wicker nets, which plays into the hands of the buyer. The fact is that in this case you can clearly consider all the shortcomings and disadvantages, such as rotten vegetables, cuts or chips on the culture. If available, it is best to choose a different bag.
It is worth saying that buying on a spontaneous market may turn out to be extremely unprofitable for you. There is no way you can tell for sure which potatoes are in the net. It may well be that this is not a seed potato, which belongs to the first or even the second reproduction, but one that has already degenerated or is affected by parasites or diseases. From this point of view, it is worth purchasing potatoes at specialized points of sale of an agricultural firm, where on each net there will be a certificate indicating the name of the variety, as well as information about the sequence of reproduction. In addition, the company often adds to the grid information on care, reproduction and cultivation, and also grows potatoes to order.
Seed potato classification
There is a generally accepted classification of seed potatoes, in which the vegetable is usually divided into four categories:
- Table potatoes. This includes the most common varieties that can be described as the most delicious. It is table potatoes that are intended for human consumption, they are used in cooking by gourmets.
- Technical views. This subspecies of vegetable is characterized by a low protein content, for this reason it is customary to use it not for food, but for the isolation of starch and the production of alcohol.
- Fodder potatoes. As the name suggests, the vegetable is used to feed domestic animals, that is, livestock. The culture has an overestimated content of starch and protein.
- Universal views. The latter subspecies can be used for any purpose, since its indicators are average.
Ripening factor classification
It is worth talking about another important classification of seed potatoes, depending on how quickly the vegetable ripens, this sign is usually called early maturity.
- Late species. The first fruits appear after 10 days more
- Medium late potatoes. The first fruits appear after 96 - 10 days
- Mid-season species. The first fruits appear in 86 - 95 days
- Medium early. The first fruits appear in 66 - 85 days
- Early potatoes. The first fruits appear in 50 - 65 days
Here are the best potato varieties, taking into account the factor of early maturity.
Early types of potatoes
It is customary to include here many subspecies of potatoes, which require a minimum of time to ripen, we will give the most common ones.
Impala
Impala is an ultra-early variety that emerges 45-50 days after transplanting. This subspecies of vegetables is usually referred to as canteens, that is, its purpose is to be used for cooking.
As for the harvest, with properly organized care, you can easily collect about 600 centners from just one hectare of land.
Fertilizer consumption during cultivation is minimal. It should be noted that the weight of one tuber can reach 150-200 grams. The culture is well stored, which has a beneficial effect on the transportation process.
Arrow
Arrow is also classified as a table variety. From the characteristics it is worth mentioning that during heat treatment, the tubers do not darken, which is extremely highly appreciated by the consumer. Also an important feature is the high yield level. Arrow's indisputable advantage is that the culture resists well the most common parasites and diseases, including nematodes and late blight.
Kholmogorsky variety
This species can also be attributed to those that give high yield rates; with proper care, about 450 centners per hectare can be harvested. The vegetable does not fall apart during cooking, it is excellent for storage.
In addition, early varieties include such as Dunyasha, Otrada, Lomonosovsky and Nikulinsky, which were bred in Russia, they are classified as superelite.
Mid-early species
Let's talk about the most common types of mid-early species.
Nakra variety
Despite the fact that the elite variety is classified as medium early, Nakra has a high yield, with the weight of one tuber reaching about 190 grams. Among the disadvantages is a high predisposition to late blight.
Russian souvenir
This type of potato is often grown in Russia. A distinctive description can be called the oblong shape of the tubers, as well as excellent taste. From 1 hectare, you can collect about 170 - 350 centners.
Odyssey variety
This potato subspecies was discovered in central Russia. Like all previous subspecies, the vegetable has excellent taste characteristics, in addition, it tolerates transportation and storage very well.
Medium ripeness varieties
It is customary to include such species in this group.
Solana
Solana is considered very productive, it is possible to collect more than 600 centners per hectare. It is worth noting not only excellent taste, but also the impressive size of the tubers. Also, this species is considered quite resistant to the most common diseases.
Felox variety
Felox is usually attributed to the table subspecies. The advantage is that Felox can be grown in almost any soil, while the yield will be consistently high.
Mid-late views
Let's find out the most common types of mid-late maturity, recommended for planting in 2018.
Becker variety
The advantage of the Becker species is its high yield, excellent taste and large fruits. Becker takes root well on any type of soil, in addition, it has a pleasant taste and good storage capacity.
Variety Aurora
A fairly high-yielding potato, which is considered to be sufficiently protected from seed potato diseases. With proper care, it is possible to collect about 15 tubers from just one bush.
Late group of varieties
We will find out which species belong to the late group.
Vesnyanka
The bushes of this species have an unprecedented yield, about 670 centners per hectare. Vesnyanka cannot boast of outstanding taste characteristics, the same goes for protection against diseases.
Condor variety
Kondor can be called the record holder among the late species. If sufficient care is organized, about 700 quintals of potatoes can be harvested from one hectare. It is worth saying that the Condor does not like over-watering.
Clone
The advantage of the Clone species is that potatoes are able to adapt to any type of soil, they perfectly resist negative influences from the outside. At the same time, the taste of the tubers is described in the description as excellent.
Recommended varieties for the Moscow region
Earlier it was said that the cultivation of seed potatoes depends a lot on the climate, that is, the area. The territory of Russia includes many climatic zones, each of which corresponds to a particular variety of potatoes. Speaking about the territory of the Moscow region, it should be said that this is not the most favorable area for growing crops. However, there are species whose seeds take root quite well in such conditions, and we will talk about them further. In this case, it is worth choosing only early or mid-early varieties, since the later ones simply do not have time to ripen in the conditions of the Moscow region. In accordance with the description, these varieties include:
- Nevsky
- Mozart (famous German species)
- Sorcerer
- Sineglazka
- Luck
- Lord of the open spaces
Varieties for the middle zone of the Russian Federation
Speaking about the climate of the middle zone, it is worth describing it as temperate, respectively, and seed potatoes must meet these conditions. It is worth paying attention to early ripening varieties, otherwise you will not see a good harvest.
This includes the following varieties of varieties:
- Yuganka
- Vashnil
- Rocco
- Adretta
- Kiwi
- Rosara
Varieties for growing in Siberia
It is worth saying that the harsh climate of Siberia is considered one of the most difficult. The fact is that the territory is characterized by a rather late spring warming and an early cooling in autumn, in addition, July temperatures are abnormally high, and August is often full of precipitation. Specially for Siberia, varieties of seed potatoes were bred, the seeds of which are capable of germinating in such soil, and then growing crops in such difficult conditions.
