What is coccidiosis

Coccidiosis is a disease caused by protozoan parasites. For the most part, rabbits and birds are affected. Parasites very quickly penetrate the digestive system and cause pathological disturbances in its work. The disease is detected by external examination, laboratory tests. An autopsy reveals that in individuals who have died from this disease, the liver and intestines are covered with small white formations.

The disease is transmitted:

  • from newly acquired animals that have not undergone appropriate prophylaxis;
  • when absorbing feed with a causative agent of the disease;
  • through contact with carriers of rabbit coccidia: flies, mosquitoes, birds;
  • through milk and feces.

Disease Coccidiosis

You can determine the presence of an ailment by the following external manifestations:

  • the coat becomes dry and does not shine;
  • loose stools;
  • unreasonable weight loss;
  • bloating.

For rabbits, this disease is fatal. If you do not provide the animal with timely assistance, the disease begins to develop rapidly. Coccidiostatics are powerful antibiotics that destroy pathogens.

Treatment of coccidiosis involves not only taking medications, but also careful hygiene and compliance with sanitary standards. To prevent the whole herd from becoming infected, the rabbits must be resettled in separate cages. The containers themselves should be carefully cleaned and treated with an antibacterial agent. Today, on the shelves of veterinary stores, you can find various safe types of coccidiostatics for the treatment of coccidiosis.

Solicox

A drug used to prevent and treat coccidiosis in poultry and rabbits. The main functional substance is diclazuril. The medicine is classified as low-hazard. Destroys all varieties of coccidia that can parasitize birds, cattle and small cattle, rabbits, pigs.

The agent is classified as low-toxic, therefore, repeated excess of the dose does not lead to intoxication. Solikox combines well with other drugs. Its use is possible in any conditions and even when the body temperature rises or when the animal is under stress.

The agent does not affect development, does not provoke mutagenic reactions in the body. The substance is heat resistant and shows good results even when using small doses. Its main advantage is that it is quickly excreted from the body and is not deposited in liver cells. It can be given to rabbits throughout the entire period of maintenance, until the very slaughter.

The solution is given in pure form or diluted in water. The dosage is calculated according to body weight and depending on the type of pet. Among the contraindications, only individual intolerance is noted. Can be used from any age. The shelf life of the medicine is 2 years from the date of release, the product should be stored in a dark, dry room at a temperature of 5 ° C to 25 ° C.

Amprolium

The medicine is available in white or light yellow powder. The substance has a specific odor. The main active ingredient is amprolium hydrochloride 300. It has a suppressive effect on coccidia in the schizogonic stage, without affecting the overall resistance of the body.

It is indicated for the treatment and prevention of infection with parasites that cause coccidiosis. The substance is added to feed or liquid. Contraindications to the use of amprolium are individual intolerance and pathological changes in the liver and kidneys. The drug is not combined with other types of coccidiostatics and feed antibiotics.

It is possible to send animals for slaughter after undergoing a course of therapy with this medicine only after 2 weeks.

You can store the drug for 2 years from the date of release. The storage space must be out of reach of children and animals. Do not put the product next to food. The medicine can be kept in dissolved form for a day, after which it can no longer be used.

Brometronide

The main active ingredient is trinidazole. Synthetic agent with a wide range of effects. Prescribed for the treatment and prevention of coccidiosis in cattle and small ruminants, pigs, rabbits and poultry.

Do not give to laying hens and individuals with individual intolerance to the main active ingredient. Slaughter can be carried out only after 8 days after the course of therapy. If the slaughter was performed earlier, the meat is fed to dogs or cats.

Baikokos

The main active ingredient is toltrazuril and a solvent. Effective against all types of microorganisms parasitizing livestock, large and small, rabbits and poultry. Indications for use: treatment and prevention of coccidiosis infection.

Slaughter is allowed at least 8 days after the end of the course of treatment. If the disease is in an advanced form, it is recommended to repeat the course in 5 days. If the drug is used according to the instructions, no side effects are observed.

When treating animals with baikoks coccidiostatic, all safety rules must be observed. If the substance gets on the skin or mucous membranes, immediately rinse the affected area with plenty of water. The shelf life of the drug, subject to all the prescribed recommendations, is 5 years from the date of release.

Toltrazuril

The drug is available in suspension with a dosage of 5% or 2.5%. It is one of the drugs that are aimed at treating protozoal infections. The main active ingredient is toltrazuril. It is used for the treatment and prevention of coccidiosis. The medicine has no contraindications. Personnel handling a coccidiostatic must comply with all hygiene requirements. When working with the substance, it is forbidden to eat, drink liquids and smoke.

Iodine

To cure coccidiosis, in the absence of the above drugs, you can do soldering with iodine solution. The substance is dissolved in water to obtain a 0.02% solution. Iodine water is given to rabbits on an empty stomach before eating in the morning.

Metal drinkers should not be used with this method of treatment. When the metal comes into contact with iodine, oxidation occurs, which can lead to poisoning of rabbits.

The rabbits are given an iodine solution for 10 days, and then, after 5 days, the course is repeated, increasing it to 15 days.

Preventive measures

In addition to all kinds of antibiotic drugs, prevention includes adequate housekeeping and the creation of appropriate living conditions for your pets. Balanced feed, clean cages, feeders and drinkers - all this is the key to good immunity of animals.

The main thing in keeping rabbits is to adhere to the vaccination schedule. Due to the fact that eared ears are not naturally endowed with good immunity, a person must independently take care of the health of his pets. Very often, a seemingly elementary cold, leads to the death of an individual. To prevent this, a number of prophylactic vaccines have been developed.

The rabbit receives its initial immunity together with its mother's milk, so the young should be removed from the rabbit as late as possible. To prevent infection with coccidia, a therapeutic course of treatment with Solicox is carried out 2 times a year. The best time for this is the last days of February and the last days of December.

It is very important to follow the rules for placing pets. The increased density of livestock in a small area significantly increases the risk of the animals contracting coccidia. The cages should be regularly washed with soapy water, disinfected with alcohol, dried containers, and only then put the pets back. The quality of the greens that goes into the feed must be carefully checked.

How do drugs work on coccidia?

Today, coccidiosis can be successfully treated even at an advanced stage. Almost all types of coccidiostatics are synthetic and antibiotics. Basically, drugs are mixed in mixed feed or in water. Once in the body, the active substance suppresses the development of parasites at the intracellular level. Pests feed on carbohydrates, and the agent reacts with them and displaces them from the cells, thereby depriving pathogenic microorganisms of food. Soon, without carbohydrates, the parasites die. In severe cases, the course of treatment is carried out several times.

Timely intake of coccidiostatics prevents weight loss, the appearance of internal bleeding, pathology in the liver and kidneys. All drugs in this group are toxic, with the exception of Solicox. In this regard, the slaughter of animals for meat must be carried out after at least 8 days, and for some medicines - after 2 weeks. And only Solicox can be given from birth and throughout the entire time of keeping, up to slaughter.

Dosages of drugs are calculated depending on the weight of the animals. The use of synthetic drugs requires compliance with all the rules specified in the manufacturer's instructions. This applies not only to the therapy itself, but also to people who work with drugs.

Anyone who comes into contact with the chemical during therapeutic interventions should:

  • carefully monitor your hygiene: wash your hands before handling and always after;
  • do not network or drink while working with a chemical component;
  • if the drug gets on the dermis or mucous membranes, rinse with a sufficient amount of water and consult a doctor;
  • work in rubber tight gloves.
